MONET SELLS FOR $81.4 M & Wassily Kandinsky For $23.3 M
The surprising winner at Christie’s auction in New York was Meule, by Claude Monet. Though the auction house estimated to sell it around $45 million. But realized almost twice that estimate- whopping $81.4 million.
In spite of the generally subdued mood around the auction, the impressionistic painting by impressionistic painter, Claude Monet, painted in oil ( 1891 ), was a surprise price reached within 10 minutes of bidding. This painting had showed up again after 1999, when it sold in a Sotheby acution for $11.8M. The current seller had picked it up from that buyer in 2002. A huge increase in value within 17 years.
Wassily Kandisky, considered one of the founders of the abstract movement also set a new cornerstone record by selling for $23.3M
The piece titled Rigide et courbé, had been estimated to sell between $18 million and $25 million, putting its $23.3 million finish squarely in the expected range. It was painted late in the artist’s career, in 1935.
